Martin Luther King Jr. Day at Bates College in Lewiston, ME is an intense, community-wide opportunity to discuss, teach, and reflect on King’s legacy. The day is a time to examine contemporary human issues through the lens of King’s work and ideas, broadly defined. It is a day of thought, reflection, and aspiration for the entire community.

The day begins with Keynote Address: No Reparations Without Racial Education: Martin Luther King on the Tyranny of Ignorance by Khalil Gibran Muhammad, educator and author. Muhammad is Professor of History, Race, and Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School.

The keynote is followed by morning and afternoon workshops. Co-Directors Esther Attean and Penthea Burns will lead a morning workshop entitled: Maine-Wabanaki REACH: Writing a Different History for Our Future. They will be sharing the history of REACH and our work with institutions of higher education and faith communities that desire to be partners and allies in the work of decolonization and standing for Wabanaki sovereignty.
