Bearings by Penthea Burns

Throw away this worn out map
We’ll chart a new course
True to our bearings in this life-world
Our burden-treasures from how we were raised
Taught
Seen

They are our super powers
They gather in our hands now
Course in our veins
Fuel heartbeats
Songs
Dreams
Wonderings

Stars and moon guide us
Rivers and oceans carry us
Shores give us respite and home

What flies or swims or crawls
Speaks our names
They call us sister
Brother
Kin

We pull the flag out from earth, our mother
Unstake our claim
Bow down, forgiven already for what we know
For what we yet do not understand
Humble, our hearts acknowledge this
This all

This is not our land, our world
We are its
Its children
Itself

We ride the rapids yowling our joy-fear
Lay on the shore in respite
Pause at day’s end in wonder
Together, we wish with the stars
